When I started my reinvention into a self-made role of an ecologist following months of disappointment applying for roles in the industry, I had no idea that the perfect role would be just around the corner and just as 2021 closed and 2022 began, a new page turned.
I applied for the role of an administrator for yet another ecology company and managed to secure an interview so I decided that I was going to go for it and spent most of the time talking about what I'd been doing with studies and research and my plans for the future. I got so excited about my passions that I had completely forgotten that I wasn't applying for an ecologist role! A phone call after secured the fact that I didn't get the admin role but instead was offered the role of a seasonal assistant ecologist. The company excel in consultancy and run a graduate training scheme so were happy to take me on as a novice and help me build a career as an ecologist.
My passions drive me forward and the start of 2022 has been a steep learning curve that has developed my survey skills and I have started to take on preliminary ecological assessments and some project management. My research space is thriving and as it enters its second year, it will be left to its own devises as it has seen a huge boost in biodiversity including insect, pollinator and bird species during the first year and there are so many different species using it that I want to leave it to be a haven. I have also devised a plan to work towards behavioural ecology, with one of our dogs being trained as a conservation dog - with me as her handler which will mean that she can work alongside me in my new career.
I decided at the end of 2021 that I would make 2022 a year of challenges and a year of breaking fears and worries, and drive myself forward. So far 2022 has not let me down and while still worrying about some areas of my new role, the company and its staff drive me forward in their support and honesty.
